Agriculture Reboot Day!

Thursday, July 21, 2022 (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM) (CDT)

Description

Join us for a Reboot Day focused on the agriculture industry here in North Alabama. This will be an all-day event (8AM-5PM) where we will spend the day talking to leaders in the agriculture industry, visiting and touring different sites and operations as well as having panel discussions. We are the Rocket City, but our city also has a huge and thriving agricultural economic driver.

Did you know….Agriculture has over a $70 billion economic impact in Alabama! With over 44,000 farms on approximately 8.9 million acres, agriculture is responsible for 4.6% of Alabama’s total GDP. One out of every 4.6 jobs is related to agriculture and over 600,000 people work directly in agriculture. Today’s farmers produce 262 percent more food with 2 percent fewer inputs (labor, seeds, feed, fertilizer, water, etc.) compared to 1950. Come join us on this day and learn more!

Locations we will be visiting:

  • HudsonAlpha - we will tour their recent expansion that encompasses two facilities: a new state-of-the-art laboratory and greenhouse space for HudsonAlpha’s Center for Plant Science and Sustainable Agriculture and the global headquarters for resident associate company, Discovery Life Sciences. Here is more about this new development.
  •  Alabama Cooperative Extension System The ACES reaches one in three Alabamians, providing research-based educational programs in agriculture; forestry, wildlife, and natural resources; family and consumer sciences; economic and community development; 4-H and youth development; and urban affairs.
  • Associated Growers Co-Op Inc - Associated Growers Co-op is made up of 11 owners who use a brand new, state-of-the-art cotton gin. The gin typically tries to produce bales between 480 and 500 pounds. Now that's a lot of cotton! More info here.
  • Isom’s Orchard - Isom's Orchard in Athens, is in its fourth generation of growers and has been around for 60+ years. They grow a variety of fruits and vegetables on their own farm. More here.
